Overview
This site describes how I integrated an iPod/iPhone into my G35 Coupe. While my G35 is a 2007, these basic principles should apply any 2003-2007 Coupe (and probably even Sedan) with a Bose head unit.
Likewise, these steps should apply if you choose to connect and iPod, iPhone or any other portable MP3 player.
Since G35 Coupes with stock Bose head units don't come with an AUX port
(what was Infiniti thinking?!), you can't easy connect an iPod or similar MP3 player. I tried using a FM Transmitter (like a
Griffin iTrip, for example) for a few months, but it sounded horrible and was a hassle to use. The only other option was an AUX input adapter that plugs into the back of Bose head unit and provides a port to connect auxiliary devices like an MP3 player.
There are a variety of options to accomplish this. Each have their pros and cons - you'll just have to do your own research and determine which is best for you. The most popular seem to be:
•
Nissan factory iPod integration kit
•
USA Spec Auxiliary Input Adapter
•
Pacific Accessory Corporation's (PAC) AAI-NIS2 Auxiliary Input Adapter
For more information on each of these, be sure to check out my
Aux Input Adapter Comparision Chart or visit

I went with the
PAC AAI-NIS2 option. It doesn't offer the controls or song information display - you've got to use your iPod to change songs, etc (instead of the head unit or steering wheel). This was fine in my case because I was actually using my 8GB iPhone (which I use as my iPod also) and wanted it mounted on the dash - so being able to see and use it to change tracks was a plus for me. Again, you'll have to figure out which works best for your situation.
Basically the PAC unit splices into the satellite radio ports/cables on the back of the Bose and provides 2 RCA inputs that you can use for an MP3 player like the iPod. I don't have sat radio but it will will work for those with XM/Sirius installed (there is a switch you must flip on the unit - refer to the manufacturer for more details as I don't have experience with this myself).
Finally, you can simply plug 1 or 2 RCA cables into the PAC unit and run them to where you'd like to store your iPod while connected. PAC also offers an additional product, the
SWI-X, that lets you use the steering wheel controls.

Hardware and Tools Required
What you need:
• G35 with Bose factory stereo
•
PAC AAI-NIS2 Auxiliary Input Adapter
•
RCA to Apple iPod/iPhone Dock connection cable
•
RCA to 3.5mm headphone jack cable (comes with the AAI-NIS2 unit)
• Plastic spackle knife (or something similar)
• Philips head screw driver (average size)
• Small wire tap (if you use the cable I did and want power)
• iPod, iPhone or any other MP3 player
• Mount for your MP3 player (if you choose to use one)
You can get the PAC AAI-NIS2 at several places like
Crutchfield, for example. I picked mine up new from
eBay for about half that price.
The PAC unit comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack to RCA cable (first pic below). But, I also wanted a iPod dock cable to RCA (second pic below)
. It has a power and ground wire so you can charge your iPod/iPhone as well. Also got this from eBay - but PAC sells them too. Since the PAC unit has 2 RCA inputs, I hooked both cables up so i could use an iPod/iPhone (via the Dock connection cable) or any other MP3 player (via the 3.5mm headphone jack cable).
Now for the mount. There are hundreds of different dash, vent and windshield mounting options for whatever device you're using. Or, you can always just run the cables into your glove box or center console and site your iPod in there and not use a mount of any kind.
As I said before, I wanted my iPhone mounted so I could see and reach it. I read great reviews about
Arkon mounts and opted for their
Air Vent Mount for iPhone and iPhone 3G (IPM129-ST). I highly recommend it if you're using an iPhone or iPhone 3G like I am. But, go with what works best for you and your specific MP3 player.
STEP 1: Dash and Stereo Removal
The first step is to remove a bit of the dash so that you can get the head unit out, in order to plug the PAC unit into the back of it.
I used a
how-to by "bradakrez" over at G35Driver.com for help with this.
He did a similar install (but using a Belkin Auto Kit with Charger instead of the powered RCA to Dock cable I used). His images and dash removal guide is outstanding - no need for me to duplicate efforts so I'm just going to use his pictures here.
Note: I'm using these photos from "bradakrez" without his permission. Full credit for all the images in this step go to him. Don't sue me! :)
STEP 2: AUX Adapter Installation
Using the
PAC instructions, connect the new harnesses provided with the PAC to the head unit and then the old wires back into the new harness.
If you have factory Sat, make sure you flip the switch to indicate that on the side of the PAC.
Plug in both your cables to the RCA inputs on the PAC. For power, I wired tapped the red wire from my RCA to Dock cable in the live wire going to the cigarette lighter and grounded the black one to a screw in the same area.
Next, you need to figure out somewhere to store the PAC unit. There is a large hollow area to the right and left of the gear shift - a perfect spot for the PAC and some of your extra length of RCA cable.
You can see this area right under the "Remove Screw" locations in the pic below.
Run your cables to where you plan to keep you iPod/iPhone or MP3 player. I ran mine down and out the dash in the passenger floorboard area. That's both wires hanging out in the pic below. Both have plenty of extra wire stuffed up just inside the dash plastic so I can pull them out when in use.
Finally, once you've got all your wires connected to the back of Bose, your PAC unit placed, wires connected and run out of your dash; it's time to put everything back together. Repeat the STEP 1 process in reverse to reassemble the dash.
STEP 3: Mount Installation
Now you can install the mount of your choice - if you wish to use one. I went with the
Air Vent Mount for iPhone and iPhone 3G (IPM129-ST) from
Arkon.
STEP 4: Final Result
Now you can sit back and enjoy high quality tunes in your G! Some more pics of my finished project below.
